New York, NY – January 11, 2018 – BritBox, the joint venture streaming service in the US, from BBC Worldwide and ITV, is joining forces with ITV Network to greenlight Bletchley Circle: San Francisco. The original series was a ratings winner that ran for two seasons; the code-breaking mystery was named by Stephen King as one of his top 10 television series of 2013.
Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, picks up in post WWII Britain and follows two of the original series’ lead characters as they travel to America in 1956, one year after the events of the original series. During World War II, thousands of American and British women worked as codebreakers. American cryptographers focused primarily on the Pacific Theatre, decrypting Japanese transmissions and San Francisco’s renowned Presidio was a key base of operations.
Rachael Stirling and Julie Graham will reprise their roles as Millie and Jean. In the new series they depart London for San Francisco and join forces with US codebreakers to tackle a string of new murder cases. Using their unique skills and intellectual abilities, the women solve complex mysteries that baffle local law enforcement. Bletchley Circle: San Francisco is formatted as four stories, each unfolding and resolving over two episodes.
Bletchley Circle: San Francisco is a BritBox Original produced by Omnifilm Entertainment in association with BritBox and World Productions, the original producers of The Bletchley Circle. Executive Producers include Guy Burt, the creator of the original series; World Productions’ Jake Lushington; Omnifilm Entertainment partner Brian Hamilton; and noted Canadian showrunner Michael MacLennan (showrunner on BBC WWII drama Bomb Girls). In addition, Soumya Sriraman from BritBox will share executive producer credits on this reprisal. Michael MacLennan’s experience creating and showrunning the WWII drama Bomb Girls along with his work on the hit procedural franchise Flashpoint make him the ideal candidate to lead the project’s creative vision.

Jake Lushington, executive producer of the original series, was immediately intrigued when Brian Hamilton approached him with Omnifilm Entertainment’s proposal to develop a new incarnation of The Bletchley Circle, which added new layers to the existing premise.
Lushington commented, “What Brian and his team had unearthed about US female code-breakers seemed irresistible. The meeting of our Bletchley women with their US counterparts becomes a perfect crucible for this new series. It will allow Millie and Jean to thrive, and, of course, use their new friends and their code-breaking skills to investigate even more intriguing mysteries.”
Sriraman from BritBox stated, “When Jonathan Ford (Kew Media) and Brian Hamilton (OmniFilm Entertainment) approached us about the revival of this beloved series in a fresh new world, we knew straightaway, it was the perfect show for BritBox fans and what we knew our audience would appreciate and devour. Given World Productions’ involvement and Bletchley’s original home at ITV Network, it only made sense for us to all come together to make this possible.

The first episodes of Bletchley Circle: San Francisco will premiere later this year on Britbox in the US, and ITV Network in the UK. Worldwide distribution is handled by Kew Media, who were instrumental in raising financing for the project.
