Overview

BBC AMERICA’s new original co-production, Undercover, from BAFTA-winning screenwriter Peter Moffat (Silk, Criminal Justice), is a bold political thriller told through a family on the brink of destruction. The absorbing and harrowing six-part series stars Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (The Hollow Crown, Hotel Rwanda), Golden Globe®-nominee Dennis Haysbert (24, Far From Heaven) and Adrian Lester (London Spy, Primary Colors) in a breakout role. Pulled from factual events in UK history, Undercover cleverly tackles hot buttons issues including government espionage and race relations to weave a tale of corruption, betrayal, and miscarriages of justice. Undercover premieres Thursday, November 17 on BBC AMERICA.

Delivering a tour de force performance, Okonedo portrays Maya, a spirited and passionate barrister (lawyer) who is about to become the first black Director of Public Prosecutions, the highest-ranking public prosecutor role in England. But just as Maya’s life comes under intense public scrutiny, she discovers that Nick (Lester), her husband and the father of her children, has been lying to her for years. And his web of lies threatens to not only destroy her career but also her life. Dennis Haysbert plays Rudy Jones – a man who has been on death row for twenty years, falsely imprisoned for murder. Maya can only watch as her dearest friend and client refuses to go quietly, urging her to fight the deep-grained injustices that have tainted two decades of his life. Truths will emerge and Maya and Nick’s lives will change forever. In following Maya and her life’s work, Undercover tackles controversial and challenging issues that impact society on a global scale, with the narrative revealed over different time frames in both the US and UK.

Undercover is the first co-developed series under the wide-ranging, creative partnership between BBC Worldwide and AMC Networks, with BBC Worldwide serving as the international distributor. The series is executive produced by Hilary Salmon (Head of BBC Drama Production England), directed by James Hawes (Penny Dreadful, Enid), with Richard Stokes (Broadchurch, Silk) producing.
